    sofa tables
  • (in  drop-leaf table (furniture))

  • A sofa table is not unlike a Pembroke table, having similar folding flaps which are hinged and can be raised and held by concealed brackets. The flaps are, however, at the narrow ends of the top, and the supports of the table vary in design; they are never straight, as in the Pembroke.

  • are similar to Pembroke tables and usually have longer and narrower tops. They were specifically designed for placement directly in front of sofas for serving tea, writing, dining, or other convenient uses.

    primitive
  • a mathematical expression from which another expression is derived

  • crude: belonging to an early stage of technical development; characterized by simplicity and (often) crudeness; "the crude weapons and rude agricultural implements of early man"; "primitive movies of the 1890s"; "primitive living conditions in the Appalachian mountains"

  • Having a quality or style that offers an extremely basic level of comfort, convenience, or efficiency

  • Relating to, denoting, or preserving the character of an early stage in the evolutionary or historical development of something

  • Relating to or denoting a preliterate, nonindustrial society or culture characterized by simple social and economic organization

  • a person who belongs to an early stage of civilization

There's a long story behind this little family of two, but I'll try to keep it relatively short. One night, while eating at one of the dozens of noodle carts that line the streets of Chiang Mai, this woman (Jan, pronounced "juhn") and her son Dtuy (ignore that face, he's actually a great kid) approached my table and asked if they could join me. Had I known what would follow, I probably would've declined the request.

Fortunately Jan's English was decent, enabling us to move (slightly) beyond the frustrating language-barrier-stare-off. By the time we finished eating, she had managed to convey that she was a nursing student and needed some help with her English. As we rose from the table and she grabbed my hand, I realized I'd just been recruited.

A short block from the noodle cart, set amongst three identical units in a non-descript cement block building, was their very modest apartment. Other than the main living area, the dwelling offered a small concrete kitchen in the back, a manual flush pit toilet, and a small sleeping loft. For these simple accomodations, Jan paid 5000 baht per month. Only $125 USD, but a fortune for a single working mother in Thailand. I didn't ask, but I'm guessing over half her salary went to rent.

Once Dtuy was occupied with Popeye (in Thai) on the tube, my tutoring began. Seated on the grey pleather sofa, nursing journal opened, she pointed at words, and I pronounced. The problem was immediately obvious. The class was taught in Thai, but the journal was written in English. So she's got a hundred pages of medical terminology that she wants to 'transliterate' from English back into the (non-Roman) Thai script so she can read the words. So it went: I prounounced a word, ususally several times, enunciating every syllable, and she wrote the corresponding Thai.

Remember, this is medical terminology, and I'm no doctor nor do I play one on TV. Although I'd heard and could prononce most of the words, many of them were completely meaningless. DIE-VUR-TIH-CUE-LOW-SIS. HI-PER-KI-LEE-MEE-UH. Inevitably she'd look up, seeking the meaning of these strange polysyllabic words, and mostly I'd have to shrug.

Then there were words I knew but wished I didn't. Imagine enunciating words capable of inducing fits of adolescent giggling, 3, 4, sometimes 5 times, to someone you'd just met. "Vuh-JI-nuh". No. "VVVuh"... "VVVuh"... VVVuhhh-JI-nuh." Closer to an adolesent than doctor, I stifled the laughter.

I hesitanty volunteered for a couple more tutoring sessions, and was rewarded for my efforts with an amazing home-cooked meal. The five course feast she threw together in half an hour in that primitive kitchen still amazes me.The rest of the story is complicated, but suffice to say that Thai women start clinging for no apparent reason. Maybe they see $$, maybe companionship, maybe just someone that pays them attention? Before I was recruited as a full-time instructor (or possibly more), I graciously bowed out and continued my travels.
